New
Current Inc. launches the Smoother heat-balancing circulator
control, January 15, 2005.
New
Current Inc. is a Toronto, Ontario-based company that has
developed a new water circulation pump control called The
Smoother. The Smoother helps homeowners with hot water radiator
heating systems save energy and improve their heating comfort.
In
Canada approximately 750,000 homes are heated with hot water
radiators. Hot water heating is cleaner and more efficient
than forced-air systems. However, uneven radiator temperatures
are common in homes with hot water heating systems. Most heating
contractors will turn the hot water pump on full-time (24/7)
to eliminate this problem. This works by continuously mixing
the hot water through the radiators but at a cost of constant
pump noise, increased pump wear and high electricity usage.
The Smoother
heat balancing circulator control operates the circulator
pump exactly when needed for even radiator heating. Compared
to continuous pumping, the Smoother conserves 75% of the pumps
electricity usage, which translates into up to $165 saved
on a 2 amp pump every year (the same as unplugging 3 refrigerators!).
The device typically pays for itself in just two heating seasons
and over the 20-year lifespan of a boiler, homeowners can
save up to $3,300.
Matt
Higginson, the company’s founder and the inventor of
the Smoother, developed the device in 2001 to fix the uneven
hot-water distribution in his Annex Toronto home. After a
few years of enjoying the benefits of the first Smoother,
he mentioned it to a heating industry acquaintance at a party
and discovered no such product existed commercially. After
working very closely with several hot-water heating contractors
and developing a number of design options, the Smoother model
A became a patent-pending, commercially-viable product to
improve the comfort and efficiency of hot-water heated home
everywhere.
The Smoother
is designed and assembled in Canada and available for order
through any Canadian heating and plumbing wholesaler. For
